Is Technoserve For-us or Against Us?
What a good ideas the Americans have introduced to Africa through an organization called TechnoServe. TechnoServe gives business support to entrepreneurs through a business plan competition where winners scoop lucrative cash valued prices. It’s of a good course and I have personally enrolled for the 2008 class. The capacity training lecturers were of high caliber and the best. I won some cash to the value of approximately US $ 1, 000 and it truly was good for me. I had to go through the screening processes after the award. However, I have this question that many participants could have about the service, ‘Is the screening process not a de-motivating factor to the entrepreneurs?’ Read on to understand my reasoning.
We know TechnoServe to be fully sponsored for the sole purpose of helping entrepreneurs in the selected countries. You won’t believe that many of us give up claiming the money from the screening process. Its good enough that you have won the price based on a good business plan, yet your proposal still is not good enough when you request the cash you have been promised. The judges do their best in analyzing your business idea and rule out that you deserve the price yet you still have to work hard to claim your support.
I have always asked myself as to why I have so much trouble getting the money to work for me just like many I have talked to that face the same problem. It could be that we do not understand the difference between winning the prices’ equivalent in cash value and the purpose intended by TechnoServe. Maybe being African makes us give up defending our business plans to the level TechnoServe wants. Could it be that our needs are way too simple to engage TechnoServe or we miss the purpose of the award?
